Elaboration EMC Measurements

Explanation about complex EMC measurements

EMC measurement can be very complex. On this page the experts of Kiwa Dare will give an explanation about some of these complex subjects.

Harmonics

Harmonics measurements are performed based upon the EN 61000-3-2 which refers to the EN 61000-4-7. This standard actually has two versions. The old version from 1991 and the new version of 2002. The old versions do not set any requirements for the so called inter harmonics, however the new version does. Therefore the newer version is more strict than the old version. The application of the old standard is allowed to be used as long as this is mentioned in the report.

The procedures used by Kiwa Dare is that the harmonics will be measured in the first place according to the new version. If the results from this test are positive (pass) then this will be mentioned in the report with the comment ''IEC 61000-4-7 (2002) + A1 (2009) (with Inter Harmonics)''. When the result is negative (fail) the test will be repeated based upon the old version of this standard. If the result is a pass after this it will be mentioned in the report with the comment ''61000-4-7 (1991) (without Inter Harmonics)''. If both tests have a negative result (fail) then the negative outcome will be mentioned in the report with both comments.
